Time’s up for toxic boss
If companies needed a reason to finally end toxic managers, the great resignation might be one. A record number of workers did quit their jobs in 2021, but it is not a one off event. This is actually an ongoing phenomenon observed for more than 10 years, showing people are simply taking more and more control over their career.
Manager, without even being toxic, can strongly influence team retention. Gallup actually showed that the immediate manager is the number 1 predictor of turnover.
Also, we are seeing more and more public debate on toxic environment. Instagram accounts like Balancetonagency are reshaping the industry, in this case the ad agency one.
Going further, companies should not only get rid of those managers but also build a culture where strong managers are celebrated and recognized.
When was the last time a manager was promoted because he was, simply, a very good manager ?
I even had the comment once, during a performance conversation, that the fact that my team was very happy with my management style, was an indication that I wasn’t putting enough pressure. (Btw, it doesn’t mean that I was a good manager for everyone, nor all the time. There is no doubt I failed more times than I would have liked to…)
Last, if you have a toxic manager, I recommend some good advice from my colleague and friend.
