Would you hire a Superstar or a Rock Star?

In her book “Radical candor”, Kim Scott says you need both.

She explains : “Rock stars are solid as a rock [...], they love their work, they found their groove” while Superstar are more ambitious and always look for new opportunities.

It resonates for me with Simon Sinek explaining that most companies reward people on their ability to reach the goal, without paying enough attention to how they got there.
For instance, one person could create a very toxic environment, with team morale moving up and down, people leaving frequently but….at the right time, on the right day, hits the goal and receives a bonus.

There is another person who is building a team, morale is good all the time, performance is steady but very high or very low but misses the target at the end of the year and therefore doesn't get a bonus.

We shouldn’t measure performance only on whether people reach a goal but also on “how” they reach (or not) the goal.

That is why, I believe, in the long run, ⚡️ Rock stars ⚡️ are probably a better bet. Unless you can hire David Bowie and in this case get both.

But, we know business is (often?) focusing on short term win.
