I wish I would get more feedback...
During a training with Stuart Lotherington,2 years ago, I had the chance to learn how to structure my feedback.
I keep on using this model almost every week while, at the same time, I haven’t received feedback more than once or twice over the last 2 years.
It is such a miss opportunity for growth and I think the main reason is that people simply don’t know how to do it.
So, here is a short version of “how to”..
⚡️ Give constructive feedback in 5 steps ⚡️
And sorry Stuart if this is slightly different from what you taught me (please feel free to give me feedback ;-))
1. Set the scene and ask for permission. Hopefully, the person will then listen carefully. It also offers them the chance to say it might not be the appropriate time.
2. State the facts. Very important to give a recent example.
3. Share how you felt. By definition, it cannot be challenged.
4. Silence. This is the awkward part, but crucial.
5. Next steps. Be clear on what you want to happen from now on.
This works also for positive feedback, even more powerful actually.
Looking forward to receiving your feedback on this post ;-)
